Rhode Island was once the jewelry capital of the world, it started in the 1800’s. By 1978 40,000 people were employed in Rhode Island and Southern Massachusetts in the jewelry making industry. The focus was fashion jewelry, awards, belt buckles, novelties, silverware and silver and gold fine jewelry. There was a school dedicated to jewelry making techniques. Students can now take classes at Rhode Island School of Design and Rhode Island College.
Today the industry is much smaller with approximately 3,200 workers. They are skilled in jewelry casting, soldering, polishing, epoxy painting, model making, engraving, stone setting, plating, stamping and the latest technology of 3D design and 3D printing.
Providence, the capital of Rhode Island was once nicknamed the Beehive of Industry. It was renamed in 2009 to the Creative Capital to mirror the city’s direction of art and education.
