The number listed on a 3M wheel represents density. 2 is the softest and 9 is the hardest, however not all wheels are available in every density.
To measure a wheel properly: Diameter X Thickness X Arbor hole. A set of wheel reducers are available. They reduce a 1″ arbor hole to 1/2″ and other sizes. There is also a reducer for tapered spindles so you can use a 1″ arbor hole.
The EXL Deburring & Finishing Wheel is a great choice for heavy deburring operations. Available in 8S or 9S fine and 8A medium.
8 is hard to the touch, similar to a hard felt wheel. “S” stands for silicone carbide the abrasive is fine. “A” stands for aluminum oxide, the abrasive is medium for a faster cut.
The EXL wheel resin system will resist smearing, making them great for stainless steel, titanium, brass, silver, gold and more. It is a convolute wrapped wheel so it must be used in the direction of the arrow or sections of material will shred. A fiberglass core allows the operator to use water for pieces that may be heat sensitive. Available in 6 X 1/2 X 1″, 6 X 1 X 1″ are in stock, larger sizes are available.
The Light Deburring Wheel is excellent for removing burrs and polishing in a single step. Used for small and finer operations than the EXL wheel.

The Cut & Polish Unit Wheel is a dense and quick cut in 7A medium. Use this on all heavy duty deburring operations. This wheel is uni-directional.

The EXL Unitized Wheels feature a soft, conformable consistency that effectively smooths, deburrs and finishes the edges of metal alloys, as well as many plastics and composites. There are a variety of densities and grades starting from a very soft 2 density for applications requiring conformability to a hard, aggressive 8 density for maximum cut and durability. This can be used on your flex-shaft or bench motor to deburr and finish white metal, silver and other metals. It is a great cast clean wheel. We stock 2S fine and 2A medium.
